One of our main stops in tassie this week was to the historic old prison Port Arthur. It was about an hour and a half drive from where we were staying in Hobart, and the drive there was just absolutely beautiful. Such a beautiful place. We were driving through zero civilization, and all the sudden we happened upon this place. A lot of the remains of the prison have been destroyed due to bush fires and embarrassment of Tasmania's darkened past, but what's left is pretty cool. Apparently this was the worst of the worst prisons in Australia. It's desolate location I guess has something to do with that. Honestly though, the way it was set in these incredible green rolling hills backing up to the ocean made it hard for me to picture it as "hell on earth" as the convicts called it. Hey, at least they had some great views!
